A student organization at the University of Illinois Chicago

Our Story

How two student clubs became FIG.

While the Finance and Investment Group (FIG) took shape as we know it in 2008, our roots go back to 1998 with the formation of the Collegiate Finance Organization (CFO), which focused on corporate networking and professional development. By 2008, the campus had two distinct student organizations: CFO and The Investment Society. These clubs were quite different but had significant overlap in their membership, to the point where combining the clubs became the best option.

In the fall semester of 2009, the clubs merged, bringing the networking club CFO and the technical Investment Society together to form FIG. This led FIG to begin expanding and strengthening its network and notoriety on campus.

Five years after the merger, students from the organization would go on to realize that many members wanted a focus on either networking or trading, in 2014 the Portfolio Management Team (PMT) was founded, not as we know it today, but the bones were there. In 2015, PMT formally founded its own student org after splitting off from its parent organization.

Today, both groups continue to coexist and maintain a 25+ year legacy on campus of preparing students for careers in finance.
